Laurell K. Hamilton - Nightseer

This was her debut roman, and I had no idea what to expect. But as Laurell K. Hamilton is one of my most favourite authors, I just had to keep on reading, even when I suspected it could become creepy.

It is a stand alone, but appears like you are plunged halfway into a series, lots of events that have already happened are hinted at.

Nightseer

Young Keleios has a dream of her mother being killed by the evil witch Harque, and the dream unfortunately is realized. Her prophetic powers are discovered, and Keleios is sent to wizardry training on the isle of Astrantha, where she is destined to exact revenge by stalking the dreaded witch.

It is difficult of writing a review of this book. It enchanted me, and I really want to read more about this world, and especially of Keleios. Will she kill the traitors who are responsible for the death of so many friends, the fall of the Keep where she is in training as a sorceress? What will happen with the man she was forced to accept as her consort, will they indeed have children? A book that is the middle of a long epos, and I need to know more. Hard to tell, I have no possibility to embroider on the back ground of Keleios or any of her friends, or her enemies for that matter. It is very fast paced, with lots of battle, with enchanted weapons and with magic. Witches and demons, devils and elves. Magic, good and bad.
But even thrown in the midst of a story, it is a great book. Yes I want to know and read more, but still the story was easy to follow. No elaborate catching up, just action. Sometimes it was a miss not knowing more, sometimes not.

So, just read it for your self and judge the book. Not by its cover, mine is much prettier. Keleios doesn’t wear dresses for instance, but armor. Leather or chainmail.

Sabrina Jeffries - One night with a prince

This is the third and final book in the Royal Brotherhood series, and it sure did not disappoint me. As usual, very easy to read, and a captivating story in itself.

One night with a prince

Continuing her irresistible Royal Brotherhood Series, bestselling author Sabrina Jeffries introduces the third of three half-noble half brothers -- the brashest rogue in all of London.Proper Lady Christabel, the Marchioness of Haversham, is desperate to regain some letters that could destroy her -- so desperate that she pretends to be the mistress of notorious gaming-club owner Gavin Byrne to accompany him to a scandalous house party where she can reclaim them. But when she agreed to let Byrne coach her on how a true mistress behaves, she never suspected how very...persuasive his wicked lessons would be.Gavin is secretly determined to find the letters himself and use them for revenge against the noble sire who abandoned him to grow up in London's worst slums. He's also delighted at how very successful his "mistress lessons" are: it won't be long before the luscious young widow is in his bed. But when Christabel catches Gavin in his own seductive net, he faces a difficult choice: to wreak the vengeance he's planned all his life, or to protect the woman he may -- to his own astonishment -- need more than revenge.

When her late husband sold some letters from her father to Lord Stokely, Christabel was in deep trouble. Lord Stokely uses the letters to blackmail the prince, and she just has to retrieve them. Or else the prince will be ruined, her father will loose his function as a general and war hero and be hung for treason, and she herself? So she has no choice but to ask Gavin Byrne, one of Prinny’s illegitimate children, to secure her an introduction to the houseparty slash whist tournament that Lord Stokely holds regularly. Will he do that? When she shot him a year ago when he came to collect the money her husband owed him?

But the only way for Gavin to do that, is to present her as his mistress. So the prim and proper Christabel must learn to be a mistress, and she must learn to play cards as a pro. Gavin wants the letters for his own purposes: to force the Prince to acknowledge him as his son, and his mother as his lawfull mistress, not just a whore. And to pay her an annuity so her name is cleared. Everyone thinks his mother died in an awful fire when Byrne was twelve, leaving him alone in the streets in London. But he still defends her name, and his own.
But growing up in the world of illegal gambling tought him lots of things, and has made him one of the richest and most powerful man in England, having his own gaming club. Which made him rich, and prior to lots of secrets people want to keep. Staying ahead of gossip is an important tool in his trade.

Gavin has had lots of mistresses, not caring about them one whit. Tossing them aside for the next one the moment they bore him, or tell him they love him. Always playing it safe, by having married mistresses. So if a woman would become pregnant even though he does his best to prevent it, the child will have a father. But now Christabel, she is different. She is a widow, and still inexperienced in lovemaking. Her late husband was a selfish lover (and a fast one), so she knows nothing of pleasure.
Christabel is not mistress material, she vows to make his life hell if he keeps pursuing her, but she has to act the part. And when she becomes his mistress for real, Gavin doesn’t know what is happening to him. He is feeling jealous, possessive, and he even spends the night with her, something he has never done before. Christabel is shocked with everything he teaches her, and with her own wanton behaviour when he kisses her, but she will do everything to safe her father, and keep her prince safe.

A good book, I really enjoyed the story. A great conclusion to this series. Great characters as usual, and a surprising ending.

Sabrina Jeffries - To pleasure a prince

This is the second book in the Royal Brotherhood trilogy, and I enjoyed it very much. I read it two books ago, so a review is a little more difficult to make than if I make it immediately.

To pleasure a prince

Beautiful Lady Regina Tremaine has turned down so many suitors that she's called La Belle Dame Sans Merci. The truth: she won't marry because she carries a dark secret. She sees no good reason, however, why her brother shouldn't court the lovely Louisa North -- even if the girl's brother, the notorious "Dragon Viscount," objects. Marcus North, Viscount Draker -- bastard son of the Prince of Wales -- is rumoured to be a monster who holds women captive in his dark castle to have his way with them. He has been exiled from polite society for years. But when Lady Regina makes a plea on her brother's behalf, Marcus proposes an outrageous deal: her brother can court Louisa so long as Marcus can court Regina. Can the beauty and the beast survive a proper courtship when the devastatingly improper passion between them threatens to cause the scandal of the century?

Marcus is convinced that Lord Simon Foxmoor is only courting his sister Louisa to get her into Prinny’s clutches, and he is not about to letting that happen! His precious sister will have nothing to do with that debaucher! He may be his father, but that gives him no rights to his sister, or rather, half sister! He is her legal guardian.
But when Lady Regina confronts the Dragon Lord in his own den, to plead to give the two a chance, as they are in love, and when denied they will only meet clandestinely, away from chaperones and such, he gives in. Kind of. Simon can court Louisa, if he can court Regina! Regina really likes Louisa, so she gives in. And strangely enough, she is attracted to the enormous man. He has no manners, he dresses badly, he could really use a haircut and a shave. Can she, the most sought after lady in the ton at the moment, tame the Dragon?

But she won’t marry him, not matter how delightful his kisses and caresses are. He can never know about the fact that she cannot read. How will she ever be a proper wife, a Viscountess, when she cannot do her own correspondence, run a household? Her own cousin and companion and former governess, has always kept her secret, protected her from even her own family, and helps her with everything. She has memorised music and such, so she can sing and play when needed. Regina is determined not to pass along her deficiency to her children. But Marcus wants to marry her, not matter what. And when he does find out, soon after the wedding, he is determined to teach her to read. Her severe headaches don’t sway him, he keeps trying. He just doesn’t believe she cannot learn, she is very clever after all. She is not defected in the brain!

And then Simon tries to abduct Louisa, even when he has promised to wait two more years till she comes of age. And Marcus has no choice but to tell his baby sister the truth, and that Prinny wants to meet her, and use her for his own purposes. Louisa is very upset that Simon has toyed with her affections, and has her own revenge on him.

A good story, nice characters, and I am curious about the third brother. What will happen with him? What woman will bring him on his knees?

New book for my collection

I have been away for the weekend, escaping the summer heat from the city to the relative coolness of the forest. And when I came home I found a book on my doormat that I have been waiting for.

Yasmine Galenorn - Night Myst

I am very curious about this brand new series by one of my favourite authors!

Of course, I have read some books during the weekend, reviews will follow shortly! My next weekends are to look forward to also, being away, and I don't know if I will have much reading time.

Sabrina Jeffries - In the prince's bed

This is the first book in the Royal Brotherhood series.

In the Prince's Bed

Miss Katherine Merivale is desperate to make a respectable match-if only her childhood sweetheart would propose! Until he does, she can't touch the fortune she's inherited. So the last thing she needs is notorious rogue Alec Black putting her proposed marriage at risk with his distracting, smoldering gaze and moonlit kisses. Alec, the Earl of Iversley-and one of three bastard sons of the Prince of Wales-is secretly searching for an heiress bride to pay his debts. Fiery Katherine seems the answer to his prayers, and her passionate response to his stolen kisses and practiced seduction soon assures him that she is his. But Alec knows Katherine is looking for a love-match, and he wonders …what will happen when she discovers his deception?

Three bastard sons of the Prince of Wales find each other, and agree to help each other to get what they want in life. Alec needs a rich bride, to restore his estate. An other brother needs respectability in society, so his half sister can find a decent match, and the third brother needs nothing much at the moment.

Alec has to marry an heiress, and he went about it coldhearted. But when he actually met Katherine, he admired her. Her looks, her character and before he knew it, he felt bad about deceiving her about who he was, and why he wanted to marry her. He didn’t only want her money, he wanted her. But when she found out, could she ever forgive him? Or would she run back to her childhood sweetheart, who wanted to marry her after all?

A good story, one I really enjoyed reading. Even though not at original plot, Sabrina Jeffries makes it original. I love her writing style, her humor, her characters. It is very easy readable, and I just wanted to know what would happen next. Of course, the happy ending is a given, but the journey there was a pleasure to read.

On with the next one!

Barbara Bretton - Casting Spells

This is the first book in the Sugar Maple series, and I loved it very much. It has a bit of every genre I love: paranormal, witches, cozy mystery, contemporary romance.

Casting Spells

Sugar Maple looks like any Vermont town, but it's inhabited with warlocks, sprites, vampires, witches - and an ancient secret. And Chloe Hobbs, owner of Sticks & String, a popular knitting shop, has a big secret too. She's a sorcerer's daughter in search of Mr. Right - and she's found him in Luke MacKenzie, a cop investigating Sugar Maple's very first murder. Bad news is he's 100% human, which could spell disaster for a normal future with a paranormal woman like her.

When she was six, Chloe’s parents died in a car accident, and she was taken in by the local healer, and raised by the towns people. But they are no ordinary people. Witches, vampires, were-animals, ghost, elves, trolls and fairies, they all call Sugar Maple home. Modeled after the famous town of Salem, Massachusetts, there is one big difference: this town is spelled to be safe, safe from outsiders, and safe from harm. Protected by a power full witch 300 years ago, the town is kept safe by every next generation of Hobbs sorceresses.

But Chloe’s mother fell in love with a human, and their daughter doesn’t posses magic. And now the spell is weakening. A powerful fairy woman is threatening to take the town and all its inhabitants with her behind the veil that separates the worlds. And only Chloe can stop her. But Chloe doesn’t have her powers, she doesn’t have the book of spells her ancestor wrote. Her mother came into her full powers when she fell in love, but Chloe hasn’t found the man for her yet.

Then a woman is found dead in the ice, and the real world encroaches on their little town. They have no crime, so there is no police, no-one dies, they just cross over, so there is no cemetery or hospital. But now a human police inspector is send over to investigate Suzanne’s dead. Was it just an ice skating accident, or foul play? As Suzanne was dating a married politician, it is important that he is not tied to her death. He stood her up on their date, so did she meet someone else?

When Luke MacKenzie meets Chloe Hobbs, the towns mayor and owner of a knitting shop, sparks literally fly between them. Chloe chalks it up to static electricity because of all the wool, but those sparks only fly when they are together. And she cannot seem to stay away from him too. How is she to protect the towns secrets from this snooping inspector, who doesn’t believe in magic even when accidents keep happening to him.

Then Isadora ups the stakes, when she and her evil son Dane are searching Chloe’s home, and destroying it in the process, searching for the Book of Spells. Gunnar, her other son, is a close friend of Chloe, and he tries to help her as much as he can.

Falling in love with Luke has set Chloe’s powers free, and totally out of control. She is kind of freaking out when she sees all the ghosts residing in town, all the energy she always felt and now sees what or who is causing it, the real looks of her friends, and not the same things strangers see when they enter town. But Isadora is not giving her the time to learn to control her powers, when she searches the knitting shop for the book. In the fight Gunnar gives his life for Luke’s, Dane gets killed too, and Chloe gets the strength to Banish Isadora from this realm. But not for good …

But can Luke face living in a world of magic, is love enough for him and Chloe, or will she lose him like all her ancestors did their loves?

What makes this book a bit difficult to read, is that it is told by Chloe and Jake, both from their own perspective. And both in I-form, which is something I don't much like. The story has to be really good for me to be able to ignore it.

Sabrina Jeffries - Married to the Viscount

This is the fifth and last book in the Swanlea Spinsters series. Even though there is no mention of Swanlea or any of those spinsters in this book … it is a spinoff of the original characters. And I liked it a lot.

Married to the Viscount

One kiss... Abigail Mercer was breathless with anticipation at being reunited with Spencer Law, whom she met once and later married by proxy. But now the dashing Viscount Ravenswood denies all knowledge of their union! Far too many witnesses have made it impossible for the secretive Spencer to reject his "bride" without causing a scandal. So he has proposed a marriage in-name-only until they can locate his mysteriously absent younger brother - who is responsible for everything! - and untangle this messy affair. Abigail is incensed, irate...and irresistibly attracted to this handsome, infuriating man who hides his smoldering passion behind a proper exterior. So the lady will agree to his terms on one condition: Spencer must seal their bargain with a kiss. But he finds that one deep, lingering, unforgettable kiss isn't nearly enough. And keeping his hands off his pretty wife is going to be much harder than he thought...

As usual, a very fast reading book. I love the humor, the strong characters, and how Sabrina Jeffries gives a not original story line an original twist and a joy to read.
I was curious which woman would get Spencer, Viscount Ravenswood, on his knees. He was pretty arrogant in the previous books. But of course he did not propose himself, his brother set him up by forging his signature and letters. Spencer never wanted to get married, he was so sure he was not capable of siring children. And every woman wants children of his own …

He doesn’t believe Abby, when she tells him she would love adopted children every bit as much as her own. He himself and his brothers were not enough for his stepmother after all. But he didn’t have all the facts, didn’t know how his father treated her. No wonder she ran off with an Italian count when Spencer was at boarding school. All those years he modeled other woman after his stepmother.

There is the secondary storyline of the potion Abby made in America, the thing that brought her in contact with Nathanial and Spencer in the first place. Sold in America as a Mead for indigestion, lady Brumley (the Galleon of Gossip) tells Abby she’d better sell it as perfume instead! And she helps her launch the brand new Heaven’s Scent at her own breakfast party. So no Nat has run of with her dowry, leaving Abby penniless and dependent on Spencer, she has funds of her own. And that makes Spencer furious! He doesn’t want her to leave him, and he doesn’t trust her to stay his wife when she doesn’t have to. But love can make people do stupid things, and he almost destroys Abby’s love for him with his foolish actions.

A good story, and I am curious about the next trilogy, which I will probably start tomorrow.

Joanne Fluke - Cream Puff Murder

The twelfth novel in the Hannah Swensen Mysteries. Yes, I did read Candy Cane Murder and loved it, but I am stuck in the second story in the book. Reading bits at a time, review will come when I have finished the whole book.

Cream Puff Murder

Bakery owner Hannah Swensen has a dress to fit into and a date with her sister, Andrea, at Lake Eden's new health club, Heavenly Bodies. Dragging herself out of bed on a frigid Minnesota morning for exercise, of all things, is bad enough. Discovering the body of man-eating bomb-shell Ronni Ward floating in the gym's Jacuzzi? Okay, that's worse. Nor does it help that there's a plate of The Cookie Jar's very own cream puffs garnishing the murder scene.

Trying to narrow the list of Ronni's enemies down to fewer than half the town's female population, Hannah has her plate full. Trouble is, when it comes to cookies - and to murder - there's always room for one more.

Delores has bought very pretty dresses for her three daughters for her book launch party. Trouble is, Hannah has gained some weight, and the dress just won’t fit. So Andrea comes up with the solution: Hannah has to diet for two weeks, and join her for exercises early in the morning in the new gym.
Hannah hates exercising, but not to disappoint her mother, she agrees. The sisters go out early, to work with the machinery, and then they join Roger’s class for exercising with a group of women. But when Roger gets injured in a car accident, Ronni Ward is taking over. And Ronni is a person who flirts with every man she sees, and who cuts the woman with her rude remarks. So she is not loved by the female population of Lake Eden. The man though, including Hannah’s own sweetheart Mike, don’t see it. Mike is living across from Ronni, and spending way to much time there.

Then Ronni gets murdered, and over half the police detectives are suspended as they were to friendly with the victim. Not only Mike gets suspended, but Bill suspends himself, and Michelle’s’ boyfriend Lonny as well. And all four of them ask Hannah to conduct an investigation, and they will instruct her what to do, and how. But of course Hannah just does her own thing, which works always better than the police methods. Beside, she doesn’t have time to follow procedure like Mike wants her, to delve into forensics like Bill wants, to check out Ronni’s past as Lonny asks.

Mike may be the prime suspect in the murder of man-eating bombshell Ronni Ward, but he's by no means the only one. Plenty of Lake Eden's ladies won't miss Ronni, including her ex-fiance's former girlfriend, the angry mother of one of her would-be conquests, and even the mayor's wife. Could any of them have wanted her gone badly enough to make it happen?

Mike is not supposed to have any contact with Hannah, so he recruits Norman to deliver his instructions to her. But he also calls her awake at midnight to meet her down in the parking garage. Not once considering she has to get up in four hours! And when she finds out he wasn’t just friends with Ronni, but they were more than that, lovers, she is really disappointed. But of course they had no exclusive relationship, so she has no right to be mad at him.

Andrea, Michelle, Norman and the mothers are really pitching in with the legwork, and Lisa takes great care of the cookie shop. She even ups the prices! But Hannah still gets too little sleep, and one night she spends the night at Norman’s, in their dreamhouse. And again, she is very very tempted to accept his proposal. The house is everything she can dream off, Norman is so sweet, and he makes a mean breakfast! But still, she is not ready. Not when the very sight of Mike makes her breathless.

Still, my idea, pick Norman! You can’t trust Mike, he has got a roving eye.

The mystery part is great, I never suspected this ending. And the book launch is a huge success. Every one thinks Delores used them as the hero and heroine. Every one, except Norman … but Hannah thinks his great character was used for the hero after all.

For now, my stash of Joanne Fluke is gone, so time to revert back to other authors. Sabrina Jeffries is in my bag, but other cozies are clamoring for my attention. Still, time for some historicals and paranormals first. Although the weekend will be extremely busy, with little to no reading time at all.

Joanne Fluke - Carrot Cake Murder

The tenth novel in this great series! The covers of the actual books are much prettier than the foto’s I’m posting here. This one is for instance, is bright orange, the last one shiny poison green! But it’s not the covers why I love those books, it’s the great stories.

Carrot Cake Murder

Summertime has finally arrived in Lake Eden, Minnesota, and Hannah Swensen, owner of The Cookie Jar bakery, is looking forward to warm, lazy days, eating ice cream, and sharing picnics with friends. But when a family reunion takes a deadly turn, it's up to Hannah to find a killer... Between baking up a storm for The Cookie Jar and unraveling the mystery of her cat Moishe's recent strange behavior, Hannah Swensen has a lot on her plate. But she'll always make time for her business partner, Lisa, who's in the midst of preparing for a big family reunion. Everyone is delighted when Lisa's long-lost uncle makes a surprise appearance. No one has heard from Gus in twenty-five years--and his arrival has everyone buzzing with excitement. Uncle Gus is immediately the hit of the reunion, telling tales of his great success and flashing money for all to see. He's almost as popular as Hannah's scrumptious carrot cake, which is also Gus's favorite dessert. But the next morning, as the whole family gathers for the group photo, one person is missing. Hannah offers to track down Uncle Gus, but her search leads to a shocking find. Over by the bar at the pavilion, she spots two slices of her infamous carrot cake, frosting-side down on the floor--and Gus's corpse with an ice pick jutting out of his chest! A little snooping reveals that not everyone was celebrating Gus's return. And when Hannah unearths more secrets from Gus's past, she discovers even more people with an axe to grind. Now Hannah's got to sift through a long list of suspects to find a killer--even if it could mean a recipe for her own demise...

With the enormous family reunion of Herb and Lisa’s extended family, Hannah is busy baking cookies and cakes in the morning, and helping otherwise with the refreshments the rest of the day. She meets the famous Uncle Gus, who ran off without a word to his family 25 years ago, and never got in touch again. His parents died without knowing what happened to their son, and his sisters are at first glance very happy to see him again. But how did he know about the reunion when they could not inform him?

Getting better acquainted with Gus, Hannah really dislikes him. He is selfish and a user, and what appears later, a fake. The tales he told them are all untrue. He doesn’t own a chain of luxury nightclubs, he owns a strip joint! And because he owes money to some bad people, he came home to Lake Eden to gather some of his possessions of old, which his parents and later his sisters, kept locked in a trunk all those years.

But who did kill him? There are enough people with a motive. He hurt a lot of them before he left Lake Eden, and old grievances never really fade. But when the main suspect is Lisa’s father, who has Alzheimer, she tries her best to clear Jack. But that is not easy when he cannot tell them where he went on his walk. And in the end, when the real killer is found, and Mike has to save Hannah again from a ruthless murderer, everyone is happy.

On the home front, Moishe is clearly unhappy. He shreddes a pillow, he makes noises in the middle of the night, not only waking Hannah up from her much needed sleep, but also the neighbours. But Norman has the solution. Since Hannah can’t find the Animal Channel, he buys Moishe a giant cat house. With holes and toys and everything.
Norman is also a great help in finding out things in Atlanta City about Gus, and informing Hannah.

And Mike? He gives her a giant flamingo for Moishe, but when she finds out he just wanted to get rid of it, and it belonged to the other woman he is seeing, she is very mad at him. What does she need that isore for? It is ugly and cluttering her livingroom! She just hopes Moishe will trash it soon.

The interaction with her sisters and even her mother keeps getting better. And her mother finally tells them all about her project: she was written a book, a historical romance novel, and it is getting published. But Hannah dreads that date, because her mother has used every one of them as characters in the book!

The next book I have picked up is The Candy Cane Murder, which is an anthology. This has the benefit that I can try out other cozy authors :)

Joanne Fluke - Key Lime Pie Murder

This is the ninth book in the Hannah Swensen Mystery series, and I read it over the weekend. As I was spending the entire weekend with my boyfriend, I didn’t have much reading time, a page here and a chapter there. My computer broke down, so no chance to blog either.

Key Lime Pie Murder

It promises to be a busy week for Hannah Swensen. Not only is she whipping up treats for the chamber of commerce booth at the fair; she's also judging the baking contest; acting as a magician's assistant for her business partner's husband; trying to coax Moishe, her previously rapacious feline, to end his hunger strike, and performing her own private carnival act by juggling the demands of her mother and sisters.

With so much on her plate, it's no wonder Hannah finds herself on the midway only moments before the fair closes for the night. As the lights click off, she realizes that she's not alone among the shuttered booths and looming carnival attractions. After hearing a suspicious thump, she goes snooping - only to discover Willa Sunquist, a student teacher and fellow bake contest judge, dead alongside an upended key lime pie.

But who would want to kill Willa and why? Before long Hannah is sifting through motives and a list of suspects which include a high school student Willa flunked, the hot-blooded brothers of a disqualified beauty contestant, a rodeo cowboy, a baking competitor who failed to win her yearly blue ribbon, and the college professor Willa was dating.

Moishe’s behaviour is troubling Hannah greatly. He has no interest in eating or sleeping, he just wants to sit in front of the window and watch the neighbours house. But why? Notting is happening there! In the end, Hannah finds out they have a little female cat, but due to allergies, they have to get rid of her again, and it’s breaking the sisters heart! Norman immediately offers to take her, and so Moishe finally gets to meet her!

Hannah is very busy solving Willa’s murder. She keeps discovering details about her life, that no one who was close to Willa knew. She was married, she’s been in prison! But did she get a divorce from the man who led her astray? Is that the motive for murder at last? Not the beauty contest, not the marriage proposal turned down, but a husband? And who was he? And is it the same man who burglarized the rodeo kasregister?
And when an other rodeo worker gets seriously injured, Hannah finds more clues. But will she find out who the murderer is in time to tell Mike, or will the murderer find her first?

It was a close call for Hannah this time, and a great mystery. Mike keeps irritating me with his behaviour. Honestly, being gorgeous and a great kisser cannot make up for that! Even when he very sometimes makes a sweet remark!

Margaret Grace - Murder in Miniature

This is the first book in the Miniature Mystery Series, and I just couldn’t get into the story.

Murder in miniature

Now that Geraldine Porter is retired, she’s got time to devote to her favourite craft. You’d think the world of shoe-box-sized Victorian shadowboxes and little ceramic bathtubs would be trouble free. But Gerry’s problems are anything but tiny…

As chairwoman of the local Dollhouse and Miniatures Fair and babysitter for her precocious granddaughter, Gerry’s got enough to think about without the curious behavior of her friend Linda Reed. Misfortune seems to follow Linda like a string of melted glue from a low-end glue gun. So when Linda and her prized miniature Governor Winthrop desk go missing the morning of the fair, a worried and annoyed Gerry gets stuck manning two tables alone. Before the week is out, a young woman and prominent townsperson are murdered, an Linda’s Governor Winthrop turns up in a most bizarre place. Then someone starts threatening Gerry. And Linda knows more than she lets on. Now Gerry must get to the bottom of things, or it’s going to be big trouble …

I just couldn’t get into the story. I didn’t sympathize with any of the characters. I didn’t know anything about making miniatures before I started reading, and I still don’t know much more. I do know it will never be one of my hobbies.

The fact that every one called one of the characters Just Eddy, because he didn’t want to tell his last name, was very irritating to me.

Gerry has to help her friend Linda stay out of prison when she is the most likely suspect in the murder of Harold Crane, when her adopted son Jason is the main suspect of robbing the same man a week ago. It is a really convoluted story with Linda, her stepson and her two ex-husbands. Gerry’s other friend, who is also her sister-in-law, her granddaughter and her nephew the police officer in charge of the investigations. Add to that as background a political rally with two large camps, and loud followers and demonstraters.

I keep thinking about why I don’t like the book. I only could read a few pages at a time, before tossing it away again. I guess I don’t like the layout of the book. Little chapters in chapters. And I miss the humor I like in other books, and perhaps that little touch of romance most cozies do have.

So, I am glad the book is finished at last, because in the end I wanted to know who did it. I never got the clues Gerry got, or perhaps enough of the background to understand the relations between the people in it. I am not going to read more of this author/series, and have already picked up the next Joanne Fluke to relax with.

Alexis Morgan - Dark Warrior Unleashed

I already love her Paladins of Darkness series, and with this first book in her Talions series, she has won me over again. They will be bought, and read soon after.

Dark Warrior Unleashed

The rough and rugged Talions, sexy warriors who stop at nothing to deliver justice, star in this steamy new paranormal series from Alexis Morgan.

He's on a mission to annihilate the enemy.

A Talion enforcer, Ranulf Thorsen has served his people for a thousand years, delivering the eye-for-an-eye justice by which his kinsmen live. Weary of the centuries-long fight, the fierce warrior with icy blue eyes has secluded himself on a mountain far from the chaos of the modern world below. Now he's been summoned to face the most dangerous battle of his life -- and the fate of his people is on the line.

But when he meets the beautiful woman he has sworn to defend...

Ranulf and his bitter rival, fellow Talion Sandor Kearn, must find the rogue Kyth who set a violent fire in a nightclub. The near-deadly blaze's unlikely heroine, Kerry Logan, is also a Kyth, possessing the ancient Nordic people's unique ability to manipulate human energy. She just doesn't know it yet

.... who will protect his heart?

Kerry finds more than comfort in her warrior's embrace, and Ranulf hungers to both defend and claim the petite powerhouse for his own. But with time ticking away and their lives on the line, will Kerry believe the wild tale he's telling her, and master her powers...before it's too late?

Difficult to summarize this story, so much has happened. A different kind of vampires, the Kyth feed on human energy, and they don't have to kill for it. But for the rest, they live peacefully between the humans. Exept for a small elite group of warriors, surrounding their Grand Dame, or Queen Judith.

I really am not in the mood to write a summary at the moment. I loved this book, will read the rest soon.

Joanne Fluke - Cherry Cheesecake Murder

This is the 8th book in the Hannah Swensen Mystery series, and I still enjoy reading them.

Cherry Cheesecake Murder

Hannah Swensen and her bakery, The Cookie Jar, bask in the glow of Hollywood glamour when Main Street becomes a movie set. And although tensions simmer as the cameras roll, no one expects the action to turn deadly...until it's too late...

There's no such thing as privacy in Lake Eden, but Hannah never thought things would go this far. Everyone has been telling her what to do ever since she got not one but two marriage proposals. Movie Mania soon shoves Hannah’s marriage dilemma into the background and even gives her cat a shot at stardom/ The Cookie Jar serves as Snack Central with Main Street rented out for the week. She stirs lots of fresh gossip, whipping up treats for cast and crew, including demanding director Dean Lawrence’s favourite – cherry cheesecake.

Everything is on schedule until Dean demonstrates a suicide scene with a prop gun that turns out to be all too real. As filming continues, Hannah sifts through the clues, hoping against hope that the person responsible for Dean’s death is half-baked enough to have made a mistake. When it happens, Hannah intends to be there – ready to rewrite a killer’s lethal script with the kind of quirky ending that can only happen in Lake Eden.

Hannah is still struggling with the decision which marriage proposal she is going to accept, when she gets pestered by almost everyone to make a decision. Some want her to marry Mike, he has been in a dreadful mood for last week, and if she chooses Norman, Mike might leave town. Others want her to marry Norman, they don’t want the best dentist they ever had. Both Mike and Norman are wracked with nerves, until she marches in on them and tells them …. she won’t marry either of them until she is ready to do so. And then SHE will propose the man she chooses. (I loved that part!)

Then her sister Michelle calls, to tell her Lake Eden will be the backdrop for a movie! And most residents will get small parts in it, and every business will be compensated for having to close down for a week. To Hannah’s big surprise, her two best friends from college are part of the crew! Ross is the producer, and Linne (who not only had her name altered, but also her face and body!) is the leading actress. It is great to catch up with them, especially with Ross. They used to have a crush on each other, even though Ross and Linda were an item back then. But Mike and Norman are not very happy with her dating Ross, and their mothers are sicking them on her, with catsitting, so she won’t be alone with Ross in her appartment.

Lots of things are happing in the book, Hannah’s niece Tracy is getting the role of the young lead actress, Moishe gets a part as her pet, and almost every one else she knows is casted or hired for something else too.

The famous director Dean Lawrence is a pain in the butt though. He thinks he is gods gift to women, and although he is married, he makes a pass at almost every girl he meets, including Hannah, Lisa and Andrea!
And when Hannah brings him his daily Cherry Cheesecake every morning, there always is another woman in his trailer, leaving through the back door … and did she just recognize Andrea’s voice?!

So when Dean is murdered, there are suspects everywhere. But with good actors, you can’t tell if they are telling the truth or acting …

Yes, great mystery and lots of fun in the personal sphere. I’ll sleep on it if I will get on with the next book tomorrow, or pick something else for a change.

Hannah Swensen - Peach Cobbler Murder

This is the seventh book in the Hannah Swensen mystery series, and because of the ending, I will go on with the next one! That, is, tomorrow morning, now it is time for bed.

Peach Cobbler Murder

With The Cookie Jar, Hannah Swensen has a mouthwatering monopoly on the bakery business of Lake Eden, Minnesota. But when a rival store opens, tensions begin to bubble... As she sits in her nearly empty store on Groundhog Day, Hannah can only hope that spring is just around the corner--and that the popularity of the new Magnolia Blossom Bakery is just a passing fad. The southern hospitality of Lake Eden's two Georgia transplants, Shawna Lee and Vanessa Quinn, is grating on Hannah's nerves--and cutting into her profits. At least Hannah has her business partner Lisa's wedding to look forward to. She's turned one of Lisa's favorite childhood treats into a spectacular Wedding Cookie Cake. And Lisa's aunt will be bringing her famous Peach Cobbler to the reception. But Hannah starts to steam when she finds out that Shawna Lee has been invited--and is bringing her own Peach Cobbler. Hannah doesn't like having the Georgia Peach in the mix, especially when both Shawna Lee and Hannah's sometime-boyfriend, Detective Mike Kingston, are no-shows to the wedding. Hannah has suspected that Mike is interested in more than Shawna Lee's baking abilities. So when she sees lights on at the Magnolia Blossom Bakery after the reception, she investigates--and finds Shawna Lee shot to death. Everyone in town knew the Cookie Jar was losing business to the Magnolia Bakery--a fact that puts Hannah at the top of the initial list of suspects. But with a little help from her friends, Hannah's determined to prove that she wasn't the only one who had an axe to grind with the Quinn sisters. Somebody wasn't fooled by the Georgia Peaches and their sweet-as-pie act--and now it's up to Hannah to track down whoever had the right ingredients to whip up a murder…

This one really kept me captivated. The woman who is after one of her two boyfriends, has started an other cookie shop, just across the street. Most of her customers desert her, because Shawna Lee is giving away most of the goodies, and she and her sister are flirting madly with all the men, showing off their figures. But Mike’s “socializing” really hurts her feelings. And then to think, they didn’t even baker their own cookies, or even their famous Southern Peach Cobler! Everything was bought frozen, and just defrosted.

Then, during Lisa and Herb’s wedding, Shawna Lee gets killed, and there are suspects galore. Almost every woman in town wished her gone. So, checking suspects, and crossing them off their lists, leaves the Swensen sisters clueless. Then their mother calls, almost in a panic. Why has her new boyfriend a picture of Shawna Lee in his underwear drawer? But then they discover it is not Shawna Lee in the picture, but Vanessa. And Hannah gets the strange idea, can someone has mistaken one sister for the other? They really did look a lot alike.

And in the end, when Hannah is almost murdered herself, her mother saves her, and they nail an escaped criminal in the act. After an icy car chase, Hannah finds herself the owner of everything in her competitors store and apartment for a bargainprice. So something good comes from all the grief they caused her, and with it, a good mystery is solved.

But the ending of the book, wow. Two proposals to marriage in 5 minutes. Who will she choose? But some one told me, that a few books from now, Hannah still hasn’t chosen between Mike and Norman. I’ll just wait and see, and enjoy their interaction. I love the humor Hannah and Norman share, and Mike is just a chauvinist. So Hannah, make up your mind and pick Norman. Even Moishe prefers him.

Talking about Moishe, he starred in this book again. Being rented as a mouser, and later on he burglars Hannah’s stash of catfood! How about a clever cat!

Joanne Fluke - Sugar Cookie Murder

This was the sixth book in the Hannah Swensen mystery series. I was very glad I took two books with me to the office today, cause half! of this book is only filled with recipes.

Sugar Cookie Murder

When it comes to holidays, Minnesotans rise to the occasion – and the little town of Lake Eden is baking up a storm with Hannah Swensen leading the way. The annual Christmas Buffet is the final test of the recipes Hannah has collected for the Lake Eden Holiday Buffet Cookbook.

The recently divorced Martin Dubinsky arrives at the buffet with his new Vegas showgirl wife – all wrapped up in glitter and fur. His ex-wife however, seems as cool as chilled eggnog. And when Hannah’s mother’s antique Christmas cake knife disappears, its discovery in the dĂ©colletage of the new – and now late – mrs. Dubinsky puts the festivities on ice.

With everyone stranded at the community center by a blizzard, Hannah puts her investigative skills to the test, using the ingredients at hand: half the town of Lake Eden – and a killer. Now, as the snowdrifts get higher, it’s up to Hannah to dig out all the clues – and make sure that this white Christmas doesn’t bring any more deadly tidings…

It was just a short story, as half the book was filled with all the recipes used in the cookbook. I was thinking there would be more to come, some mistake, another murder perhaps, when the story ended.
I must say, in the previous book, Mike was alright with Hannah investigating, and in this one, he was really patronizing again. She should leave it to the professionals, blah blah. So Hannah and both her sisters and Norman solved the case before he even got a clue. No idea what he was working on, he didn’t share with Hannah, and as he wouldn’t give her a few minutes of his precious time, he never would have found out anything.

So I prefer Norman over Mike more and more. And is he also kind of dating his secretary, Shawna Lee? Or is she just after him and he doesn’t get it? But I believe Mike has a roving eye, and Hannah should choose Norman.

Also the sisters meet their mother Delores’ new “boyfriend”, Winthrop Harrington II. And Hannah just doesn’t like him, and his mannerisms. But her mother is really fond of regency England, and she loves it. A real English Lord…

Who had a motive for killing Brandi Wyen? Was there someone who knew her before she became the new mrs. Dubinsky? Hannah’s investigative skills are really neaded this time, to get to the bottom of it. To find out everything about a stranger is not really easy. But everyone she finds out with a possible motive is soon cleared, or can Norman’s photo’s help out?

If there is someone thinking, pff read something else besides Joanne Fluke, don't worry, I am reading more books at the same time. If I finish them, that is the question...

Laurell K. Hamilton - Bullet

Bullet is the 19th book in the Anita Blake series. Some are very good, some are not so. You just love those books, or you hate them. But you really should try it. And do start with the first one in the series please.

Bullet

The triumvirate created by master vampire Jean-Claude, necromancer Anita Blake, and werewolf Richard Zeeman has made Jean-Claude one of the most powerful vampires in the U.S. He's consolidating power in himself and those loyal to him, doing in America what Belle Morte did in Europe when she was at her height of power. She almost owned Europe, and there was those who are determined that Jean-Claude won't do the same in America. Jean-Claude's motives may be kinder, but as any lawyer will tell you: motives matter, but you're just as dead. Assassins are coming to St. Louis to kill them all. Anita knows they're coming, but even being forewarned doesn't mean you can win.

I have been eagerly awaiting this book, ever since that way too short story Flirt. And I was reading and reading, and waiting for the action to come, and suddenly, there were no more pages. And nothing really is resolved. Pff. No idea when the next book will be written, could be a year from now.
Anita’s life is going well, she is getting used to Nicky as her Bride (or Groom) as the were animals call it. She and Jean-Claude are courting the were tigers to come to town, to up their power base. And now Asher is acting out, he wants more attention than he is getting, and suddenly Richard is back in their lives, willing to do what he never before would. Does therapy really work that well?
Marmee Noir is dead, but not really. The members of the Council just couldn’t let all that power go to waste, and now she is a part of them, just like a puppetmaster. But she is not at full stenght yet, so they can fight her off this first time.
And as usual, time runs out of their hands, and Anita has to have sex with strangers to bind them to her, and to Jean-Claude, but this time, they also have sex with same sex partners, and I really don’t like reading about it. It is like Anita and Richard have both shed some of their last reservations, give in to their baser desires. And I don’t like them. So, I just skip those pieces, and get on with the story line.

Took me about 8 hours to read this book, and I enjoyed it, but not as much as I have hoped. There was just hiding and danger, and the tragedy with Haven, and too many loose ends left dangling. So, back to the waiting, and of course, the rereading …

Joanne Fluke - Fudge Cupcake Murder

This is the fifth book in the Hannah Swensen mystery series. After reading the previous book I was very curious about what would happen with Hannah and Mike and Norman. Would they propose? So I started this one right away.

Fudge Cupcake Murder

For Hannah, life seems to be lacking a certain flavor lately. Maybe it’s the local sheriff’s election that’s got her down. For years, Sheriff Grant’s been the iron hand in town. But now, Hannah’s brother-in-law Bill is giving the old blowhard the fight of his long, dubious career – and Grant’s not taking it well, especially once the polls show Bill pulling ahead.

But before anyone can taste victory, things go sour. While Hannah’s emptying the trash, she makes a very unappetizing discovery: Sheriff Grant’s body in the Dumpster behind the high school where she’s teaching her cooking class. And as if that weren’t bad enough, the poor man still has fudge frosting on his shirt from one of her cupcakes.

The number one – and only – suspect is Bill, but Hannah’s not swallowing it. Plenty of people had reason to hate Sheriff Grant. Soon, Hannah’s dishing up scandalous secrets, steaming hot betrayals, and enough intrigue to keep the gossip mill at The Cookie Jar going through several pots of decaf. And the closer Hannah gets to the truth, the closer she gets to smoking out a murderer with a very nasty recipe for silencing people…

Well, to answer my own question, the dreamhouse is being build, but no proposals have been made yet. Even worse, Norman is away on a dentist convention, where he meets his former fiancée, and Mike is in the doghouse for thinking Bill has murdered their boss.
And Mike seems to be dating some one else, a pretty blond secretary working for him, or doesn’t he see the coming on she does like Hannah can? He even tells Hannah she should use her recipe! What a stupid man to even suggest something like that!
With Bill at home (being suspended from work), Andrea is getting nuts because of all the househusband things Bill is doing, cleaning and throwing things away, and being on her lip all the time. So she wants to help Hannah to clear Bills name, and of course find the real murderer. But Andrea is confounded to the house by the Doctor pretty soon, and can’t assist Hannah with everything anymore.
Then the publisher who wants Hannah to write a Lake Eden cookbook wants to publish three months earlier, and Hannah will have little time to finish everything. Her cooking class is trying out all the recipes her fellow residents have submitted, figuring out the flaws and improving them. But the biggest challenge is the recipe for Fudge Chocolate Cupcake, with a secret ingredient! Can Hannah and Lisa figure out what it is in time for publication?

About the murderer, I figured out who did it a lot faster than the why. But it was very interesting to learn what Hannah found out about previously mentioned characters in this series. The romance part is almost non existent, but now Hannah’s mother, Delores, is dating a mysterious and romantic guy. Hmm wonder what will happen with that…
And Moishe plays a big part in this book.

And there is actually a recipe I might try out sometimes, the Hole in One. Baking bread and an egg at the same time. Sounds easy and fast …
But baking an egg is not really cooking, is it? Or did Joanne Fluke convert me?

Joanne Fluke - Lemon Meringue Pie Murder

The fourth book in the Hannah Swensen mystery series, again with mouthwatering recipes inside. I loved it.

Lemon Meringue Pie Murder

Hannah Swensen though she’d finally discovered the recipe for a perfect life. But her sometime beau Norman Rhodes tosses a surprise ingredient into the mix when he phones to tell her he’s just bought a house from local drugstore clerk Rhonda Scharf – which he plans to tear down in order to build the dream home he and Hannah designed. It seems the plan has been cooking for quite some time, and Hannah’s shocked. Especially since her ring finger is still very much bare …

The good news is that the soon-to-be-torn-down house is full of antiques – and Norman has given Hannah and her mother first dibs. They uncover some gorgeous old furniture, a patchwork quilt … and Rhonda Scharf’s dead body. A little more sleuthing turns up the half-eaten remains of a very special dinner fo two – and one of The Cookie Jar’s famous lemon meringue pies. Now it’s up to Hannah to turn the heat – and get busy tracking down clues. Starting in her very own kitchen …

After finding Rhonda’s body Hannah is determined not to get involved this time, she is swamped with work for the fourth of July. But as her mother and Norman both ask her to investigate, she has no choice. And of course, she is curious about Rhonda. No-one much liked her, or knew something about her, though there were rumours she actually had a boyfriend lately.
Even Mike is fine with the fact that she will “help” investigate. He still believes a professional like himself is better at it than an amateur like Hannah, but so far, it was Hannah who cracked the cases!

As usual her sister Andrea helps as much as she can, she even gets the senior citizens and the kindergarten children in her daughters school to help build a float for the Cookie Jar for the parade! So when she has delegated that task, she has all the time she needs to help Hannah solve the mystery.

Thanks to Lisa, Hannah finds out who bought the Lemon Meringue Pie that was Rhonda’s last meal. And she finds out who the secret boyfriend was, but can soon eliminate him. So, no more clues to follow, how will this murder be solved? Was Rhonda just at the wrong place at the wrong time? But then stolen money from an old bankrobbery is being spend in town. Did some one find the stash the bankrobbers hid?
And why did Rhonda lie about going on holiday to Rome for two weeks, when she bought a one way ticket to Zurich? The land of numbered bank accounts?

In the end, the events follow each other rapidly, and just when Hannah has it figured out, the killer finds her, and tries to silence her. But rescue is on its way …

I loved the parts where both Mike and Norman are fussing over Hannah, but neither is ready to commit themselves. Hannah herself is also not sure if she wants to get married if they ever ask her. She is happy with her life, busy with her shop and her catering activities. And when they are both sitting with Hannah, they are talking men-talk with eachother, hmm.
But her mother is hinting more and more, and in the end even straight out asking the men in her life, when Lisa is the one with the engagement ring on her finger from Herb Beeseman. How about a double marriage?

So, lets find out in the next book. Will the dreamhouse be build? And will they both propose? I was planning to read something else in between, but am not so sure anymore. I just want to know what will happen next.

Joanne Fluke - Blueberry Muffin Murder

I never should have started reading in bed, "just a few minutes" because this book just had to be finished! The third Hannah Swensen Mystery.

Blueberry Muffin Murder

Preparations are underway for Lake Eden, Minnesota's annual Winter Carnival - and Hannah Swenson is set to bake up a storm at her popular shop, The Cookie Jar. Too bad the honour of creating the official Winter Carnival cake went to famous lifestyle maven Connie Mac - a half-baked idea, in Hannah's opinion. She suspects Connie Mac is a lot like the confections she whips up on her cable TV cooking show - sweet, light and scrumptious-looking, but likely to leave a bitter taste in your mouth.

Hannah's suspicions are confirmed when Connie Mac's limo rolls into town. It turns out America's "Cooking Sweetheart" is bossy, bad-tempered, and downright domineering. Things finally boil over when Hannah arrives at The Cookie Jar to find the Winter Carnival cake burnt to a crisp - and Connie Mac lying dead in her pantry, struck down while eating of Hannah's famous blueberry muffins.

Next thing Hannah knows, the police have declared The Cookie Jar’s kitchen crime scene off-limits. She’s a baker without an oven – and the Carnival is right around the corner. Hannah’s only alternative is to cook up a plan to save her business – by finding the killer herself …

A great book, I was almost totally in the dark till the last pages, so the mystery was great. Hannah herself is still dating both Mike and Norman, and they both appeal to her. If only there was a man who had both their good things combined!
Her mother is after her to stop finding dead bodies, as it will ruin her reputation. Her sister Andrea is helping Hannah as much as possible, but when she starts eating and eating and eating, Hannah suspects she is pregnant again, and she can’t put her sister in danger. They found out things about their friend Janie, the police’s first murder suspect, and Mike even suspects Norman! Or is that out of jealousy?
Yes, a good book, and I will continue reading with the next one.

If you love sweet recipes, you should read those books, as they are loaded with them. Yes, they are even tempting me….

Joanna Fluke - Strawberry Shortcake Murder

This is the second book in the Hannah Swensen murder mystery series.

Strawberry Shortcake Murder
In her debut mystery, Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder, intrepid amateur sleuth and bakery owner Hannah Swensen proved that when it comes to crime, nothing is sweeter than a woman who knows how to really mix it up. Now, the flame-haired, tart-talking (and baking) heroine is back, judging a contest where the competition is really murder.

When the president of Hartland Flour chooses cozy Lake Eden, Minnesota, as the spot for their first annual Dessert Bake Off, Hannah is thrilled to serve as the head judge. But when a fellow judge, Coach Boyd Watson, is found stone-cold dead, facedown in Hannah’s celebrated strawberry shortcake, Lake Eden’s sweet ride to fame turns very sour indeed.

Between perfecting her Cheddar Cheese Apple Pie and Chocolate Crunchies, Hannah’s snooping into the coach’s private life and not coming up short on suspects. And could Watson’s harsh criticism during the judging have given one of the contestants a license to kill? The stakes are rising faster than dough, and Hannah will have to be very careful, because somebody is cooking up a recipe for murder,,, with Hannah landing on the “necessary ingredients” list.

I loved this second book in the series, and I am glad there are 10 more on my shelf right now to read. I really like Hannah, and how her private life is coming about. The last page was so good!
And the mystery was a good one too. Coach Watson is adored by his pupils, especially his basketball team, but for his wife he is not so good. He regularly beats her up, but she won’t press charges. So when he is brutally murdered, his wife is the best suspect. And as it is election year, the sherriff won’t put to many hours in finding an other suspect. Hannah cannot let her friend go to jail for a murder she didn’t commit, and sets out to find the real murderer. With a lot of help from her sister, she finds a blackmailing journalist, who ends up murdered too, finds the evidence of the blackmail and gives it back to the people being blackmailed, and still has time to bake cookies and desserts, and spend time with her gigantic cat named Moishe. And of course, she discovers the murdered, almost too late to save herself from being the headlines in the news!
